Brain Health Imbalances

Definition- conditions and diseases of the brain can lead to mood disorders like Depression and Anxiety or Attention Deficit Disorders and cognitive decline in Dementia and Alzheimer's.  Causes are likely a combination of genetics and neurotransmitter imbalances.  New research points to gut biome imbalances and communication with the brain as a reason for some issues as well.

Symptoms

ADD/ADHD- attentive disorders- Trouble focusing or hyper-focusing on activities, impulse control or a combination of both that make daily functioning difficult

Depression- persistent inappropriate sadness leading to low energy and motivation that often disturbs sleep, appetite, and concentration

Anxiety- persistent inappropriate fear and worry that interferes with daily life and causes physical symptoms and long-term chronic disease

Dementia- progressive decline in memory, concentration, and reasoning that eventually causes inability to do daily tasks and mood and behavior changes

Alzheimer's Disease- progressive type of dementia with amyloid plaques and tangles in brain that destroy cells, now being called Type III diabetes

Functional Medicine Approach

  • You will have a full assessment of your current lifestyle, nutrition, stress level and management, and sleep health and hygiene.

  • Individualized plans of care will be created by the practitioner and patient.

  • Depending on your specific symptoms, there may be more targeted assessment and testing of blood sugar metabolism, thyroid function, pituitary. or hypothalamus function and cardiovascular assessment, gut imbalances, food intolerances, toxin screening, hormone imbalance, antibody intolerances, inflammatory markers, and/or deficiencies of nutrients.

  • After finding the root cause of illness plans may be revised.  Solutions can be multi-layered and take time, especially auto-immune disease and hormone imbalance.  We may need to integrate care with a specialist after referral.

  • Detox plans are gentle and supervised if necessary.
